KARANDILA
from Sliven, Bulgaria
Karandila are one of the tightest and most dynamic brass cocek orchestras in the business. They are not as loose or dirty as your typical Gypsy band; instead then incorporate the energy and crispness of Bulgarian folklore (like rachenitsa and horo) Karandila's signature sound is unmistakable and very energetic. Synchronized brass instruments (mostly trumpets) are their main suit. Overall, they have a well coordinated and "orchestral" sound.

Ferus was born during 1950 in what is know today as Macedonia. His dad Ilmi is famous for introducing the saxophone into cocek music. Ferus is known to play a number of instruments including the sax and clarinet. His recording career spans for over thirty years but it wasn't until 1984 that he really proved himself. During the same year, Ferus released the bestseller Hora & Chocheci, one of the greatest cocek albums of all time. Some of his more popular works include the 1990 hit Ferus Mustafov & His Guests (with over 100.000 copies sold), King Ferus (1995), and the 1972 Svatba LP (collaboration with Esma & Ensemble Teodosievski).
Ferus' work is emotionally charged and very introspective.
He has a very abstract style combining the "underground" Roma sound which you may hear at a village banquet with modern jazz improvisations.

BOBAN MARKOVIC ORCHESTRA
from Serbia
For a whole decade, Boban Markovic has been the single most recognized trumpet player on the Balkans. Boban along with his band, have earned global acclaim and awards like the Golden Trumpet, First Trumpet, and Best Orchestra from the prestigious Dragacevski Sabor.
|

It wasn't until Markovic began movie work with Goran Bregovic that his band exploded worldwide. Boban Markovic Orchestra did the soundtracks for Underground and Arizona Dream, both produced by Emil Kusturica and released in the West. Under Bregovic's supervision the band employed a more universal sound with various elements from diverse Balkan regions. Aside from that, the Boban Marcovic Orchestra have their own unique style. They like mixing typical Serbian tempo, powered by rapid trumpet bursts with loose Gypsy solo improvisations.
